One of the problems with playing in rooms above pubs or conventional concert halls was the expansion of sonic technology developed by LMC members. Pioneers such as guitarist Keith Rowe (seen above playing horizontal guitar, B&W image) worked best in environments that accepted this radical questioning of how an instrument was configured: percussionists expanded their drum kits to the size of rooms; musicians like Max Eastley invented sculptural instruments; other guitarists such as Fred Frith (shown above with John Tilbury) abandoned normal techniques for a time. For a new generation of improvisers such as Caroline Kraabel and Rhodri Davies, the need to rediscover the performer’s relationship to an instrument, or even reinvent the instrument for every performance, was accepted as an integral part of being an innovative musician.
